INDEPENDENCE DAY CARNIVAL

This year sees Seychelles celebrate 30 years as an independent country. A huge number of events were organised for Independence Day including a carnival parade through the capital, Victoria. The International School took part...

On Saturday 1st July International School joined the Carnival Processions through Victoria to celebrate Independence Day in Seychelles. We joined 55 other floats to make an impressive procession through the crowded streets. The theme of the day was ‘Selebre Sesel’ and the idea on our float was to display the cultural diversity of our school.

Early Childhood Section staff decorated the float – with the help of many children. Art work was overseen by Gina Philoe in the Early Childhood section and along with Charline Jean, Vivienne Course and Helena Simara the float took shape. Art work included a large globe of the world, many painted flags of the world and colourful shakers. Miss Janice, Miss Gina, Miss Vivienne and Miss Charline coordinated the float arrangements and attended many practices with the children before the big event. Children from the junior section were invited to attend and dress up in the national costume of any of the countries represented by the parents of the International School. The result was very colourful.

Led by Martin Kennedy – who was dressed as our mascot, the procession started at 4.30pm. with a loud bang! We danced and sang our way around Victoria. We finished at the Inter Island Quayside where we were able to get a look at all the other fantastic floats which had been in the show.

What an exciting day.

Many thanks to Evans Mothe for loan of his truck for the big day, to Jayne Camille for providing material for our flags, for Mr Mellie for making a stand for our globe, the P.T.A. for providing us with water, Andy Gee for the helium balloon, Russell for painting the world. Thanks also to everyone who helped with the artwork including Martin Kennedy whose paintings adorned the truck on both sides and Year 12 students Jessica and Linda. Also to the parents of the children who took part for bringing them to practises and helping them to choose costumes for the procession. Many thanks to Regis for all his hard work on construction. Thank you last of all to all the children who participated in the float procession and danced so wonderfully.

Here are some pictures from the parade...
