| Coursework on Bird Island! |
 |
After
a thirty minute flight we finally caught sight of a beautiful
island surrounded by turquoise and deep blue waters. This was
our destination for the weekend. On arrival we were given a
brief introduction to the island and the work that’s going on
there. Then the rest of the day was dedicated to exploring the
island and relaxing on the long, white beaches...

| London School of Economics Visits
ISS |
 |
On
Friday the 10th of February, students from the Sixth Form
eagerly waited in SL1 for a presentation by Mr Will Breare-Hall,
International Student Recruitment and Study Abroad Manager at
the London School of Economics (LSE).
The talk was charismatically delivered by Mr Breare–Hall, who
explored the range of courses on offer as well as the benefits
of having studied at LSE in terms of future careers. A high
percentage of LSE graduates go into employment after completing
the degree. An important fact to consider!

| Year 2 Visit the Botanical Gardens |
 |
On
Valentines Day Year 2 explored the Botanical Gardens in Mont
Fleuri.
Here they investigated the seeds, plants and flowers. They
enjoyed clapping their hands to see the fruit bats wake up and
fly out from the mango trees.
The children and parent helpers had a real adventure walking
through the deep jungle and looking at the vines and creepers
there. The giant tortoises were also a popular attraction. We
saw the huge Coco de Mer tree too.

| Year 2 Visit the National History
Museum |
 |
Class
2 enjoyed a trip to the National Library to visit the National
History Museum. This term we are learning about Seychelles
History and all the children were very interested to see the
artefacts in the museum. They particularly liked the model ship
and the new display about slavery.
Many thanks to the museum staff for being so helpful and
pointing out many interesting things.

| Sixth Form Sculpture Project |
 |
Sixth
form Art and Design students are currently creating figurative
sculptures.
The project, which has now been running for three weeks (as
of Feb 1st) began with intensive life drawing, followed by the
construction of armatures using grinding machines and arc
welding equipment. These will form the sub-structure for clay
modelling which, in turn, will finally be used to cast the work
in plaster.
We will show you more images of the work as it progresses,
but in the meantime here are some images from the early stages
of the project. Many thanks to Vijay Construction for the
donation of wood and metal off-cuts, George Camille for the loan
of cutting and welding equipment, and Rita, our model.

| Year 2 Become Pirates! |
 |
Year
2 have been learning about the first pirates to arrive in
Seychelles. In the home corner we have made a pirate ship.
Inside our treasure chest are lots of dressing up clothes.
The children in class 2 have enjoyed dressing up in their
pirates hats and using their cutlasses to pretend to be pirates
on the high seas. The photographs show our girl and boy pirates
are equally fierce!! The rest of the Early Childhood students
had a chance to see these fearsome buccaneers when Year 2
performed a pirate assembly.

| Nature Club Gets Active |
 |
Our
second trip of the school year was held at the start of the
second term. The intention of our trip was to clean-up one of
Seychelles’ more remote beaches, and the beach we selected was
the Anse Major Beach.
The hike was a long one and on the way, students involved got
to see some endemic plant life and unique scenery. On the 2.5km
hike to the Anse Major beach, we saw such plants as Queen De
France, Wild Pineapples, Wild Vanilla, Wild Coffee, Wild Cashews
and various species of palms. We also found a fresh water stream
and a small cave on the way to the beach.
Thoroughly worn out, we arrived at the beach...

| The Container Moves |
 |
Finally
the school was visited by one of Vijay Construction’s massive
portable cranes which made quick work of the task of moving the
storage container some 10 metres from the position it has
occupied for the last 15 years.
The reason for moving it was to provide access to the new
grass playing area. At the moment staff and students are
considering how best to use this new facility but however it
finally ends up (and there are some very exciting ideas in the
pipeline) access for the children will be much more comfortable
now that there is not several tons of metal between them and the
grass...
As for the container we are going to have it re-painted and
re-roofed for it’s final period of service. We hope to dispense
with it completely next year when, hopefully, we will have
additional storage space available for maintenance.
